May 14 – July 5  – Water, Water, Everywhere

Vancouver Sketch Club

We have chosen the theme to reflect on how precious this resource is. Water slakes thirst, nurtures, replenishes. Water can be churned into a storm, harnessed for energy or allowed to float placidly. Flora and fauna need water for survival and enhancement. Water can also be destroyed by careless action. We have a varied selection of paintings which represent this life force.

Paintings are for sale

If you see a painting you would like to purchase, please contact the artist directly or at the following email: vansketchclub@gmail.com

April 16 – Third Sunday Book Group

Roseanne McNulty is a long-time resident of a regional mental hospital set for demolition. Her chronicle is the main part of The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry. Barry’s prose is lyrical, full of fresh, salty metaphors and images both barren and brimming with life.

Presenter: Rob Dainow

Hygge (Circle) Dinners

Patti Turner and Mary Bennett have taken on coordinating circle dinners with a goal of introducing new members. If you’d like to attend or host a potluck dinner either at the church or in a private home, contact ucvhygge@gmail.com. (“Hygge” is a Danish word for “cosy”.) Dinners are usually for 8 – 10 people in a member’s home to facilitate small group conversation. On occasion they may be at the church to accommodate a larger group.

January 21: UUs March for Women’s Rights

There were maybe a dozen or so of us gathered under the Unitarian Church of Vancouver banner as we listened to the moving speeches before the march began.

We marched in solidarity with all women, of all races, religions, gender identities, and all oppressed, in Vancouver, in Canada, in the US, and around the world. I’ve said, the March was a continuation of a fight, a fight for equality. And a fight that we will follow up on.

I’m glad to be a member of the Unitarian Church, where I know I can gather with other like-minded people, and we can mount campaigns to change the world, and we can make a difference. Thank you. Theresa Marion, UCV

Joy Coghill (1926-2017)

Vancouver performing arts legend Joy Coghill passed away at the age of 90 on January 21, 2017. An admired and beloved actor, director, and producer, Joy’s career spanned seven decades and saw her performing in theatres across the country, as well as founding inspirational theatre companies for children and seniors. In retirement, she worked to bring to life the Performing Arts Lodge in Vancouver, a social housing project to provide affordable housing to aging people in the performing arts community.

We send our deepest sympathies to Rev. Debra Thorne, Beacon Unitarian Church, and Casey Stainsby, CanUUdle Coordinator, on the loss of your mother and grandmother. Read more about Joy’s life and career from the Vancouver Sun.

Post-Election Potluck and Conversation

An Invitation from Rev. Steven Epperson to UCV members and friends:

Hewett Hall, Saturday, November 12, 2016 6-8:30 pm

Given the outcome of the elections in the States on Tuesday, and the thoughts and feelings many of us may be experiencing, I thought it would be helpful to gather for some food and conversation. Bring a dish to share and your good selves.  I will be there and glad to be in the company of any and all who wish to show up.

In the meantime, some thoughts borrowed from Bruce Levine that my partner shared with our Stateside families:

Though dark thoughts, feelings and tears are reasonable responses to difficult circumstances and horrible news, there are other strategies we can bring forward: a thoughtful detachment in order to see, understand and to bear witness a dark sense of humour collective resistance and cooperation kindness to fellow sufferers and savour those moments of respite that come by focusing on the beauties of nature, and on our children and grandchildren.

My best to all on this grey, drizzly Wednesday morning.  Steven Epperson
