Volunteering to help refugees
Thank you for considering refugee support work!
This can involve, for example, apartment hunting, teaching English, giving financial aid, visiting the doctor, gathering household items and clothing, or just lending an ear.
Refugees are brave: their strengths and their cultures enrich us; they contribute much to Canada.
Monthly Meeting: The committee usually meets on the 4th Sunday of each month at 12:30.
Vancouver Unitarans have sponsored hundreds of refugees over many decades. We were approved as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder in the fall of 2019. This designation gave us the opportunity to expand our work even further, as long as funds are available. It also means we have a direct relationship with the government, rather than going through the Canadian Unitarian Council which may help to expedite sponsorships.
Over the years this congregation has sponsored, or helped locally, refugees from Viet Nam, Central America, Burma, Afghanistan, Mexico, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Serbia, Syria, Turkey, Eritrea, Burundi and Palestine.
