Hotel workers at four Vancouver luxury hotels – Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Hyatt Regency, Westin Bayshore, and Pinnacle Harbourfront hotels – have now been on strike for over three weeks. Their demands are what any worker deserves: a livable wage, decent retirement, safe workload, stable full-time jobs and a working environment free of sexual harassment.
UNITE HERE Local 40 has a diverse membership that includes workers from many immigrant and First Nations communities. The majority of UNITE HERE members are women.
Through organizing, UNITE HERE members have made hotel housekeeping jobs and thousands of other traditionally low wage jobs into good, family-supporting, middle class jobs.
Support from UCV members is growing: Rev. Steven Epperson and Leslie Kemp (Social Justice) have been at rallies and meetings in support of them for months now. About 20 UCV members were involved in making and delivering lunches to striking workers on the picket lines and their are plans to do more of this.
Come to this forum to find out more about the issues and how you can support this important struggle in our city.
