All are welcome at this monthly book group meeting. We read and discuss a wide range of books, all chosen by book group members.
We will meet ONLINE after the service on November 8, 2020 to discuss “The Elegance of the Hedgehog” by Muriel Barbery. Do not be put off by the strange title, but be prepared for a very holistic discussion about all that encompasses our lives both negatively and positively. The magazine Elle in Italy describes it as “An exquisite book in the form of a philosophical fable that has enchanted hundreds of thousands of readers.” A reader commented that “It’s such a nice change to read a life-affirming book. Well-written, witty, and good character development. One of my all-time favourites, and one I can imagine re-reading. The first few pages will give your brain a workout (stick with it, you can do it!) but move through them to discover a wonderful book about a precocious girl with family issues searching for the meaning of life with an older mentor who is outwardly very simple but has an inner life propelled by art and literature.”
In Isaiah Berlin’s famous definition of two kinds of thinkers, foxes gather multiple unrelated ideas, while hedgehogs subsume everything into a controlling vision.
We meet online after the Sunday service on November 8, 2020. Go to ucv.im/coffee after the service ends and ask to join the Book Group breakout room. Get ready for a lively discussion with our Sunday group. Please join us, you will be a positive addition.
