Second Sunday Book Group

Sun, May 9, 2021 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

All are welcome at this monthly book group meeting. We read and discuss a wide range of books, all chosen by book group members.

We will meet ONLINE after the service on May 9, 2021 to discuss Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah. Celebrity comic T. Noah gives us a remarkably raw, honest, riveting memoir of growing up in apartheid Soweto So. Africa. His many vignettes of  surviving/thriving on gritty, chaotic streets of the ‘Hood’, in an abusive dysfunctional family, victim of grinding poverty, oppressive racial laws of Apartheid evokes in the reader concern, sadness, laughter & some OMG moments. The portrayal of his resolute, rebel, tough love Xhosa Mom is memorable. Their sharp funny dialogue is a treat. Each of the 18 chapters in 285 pages is preceded by a brief historical theme or conflict. His analysis of the Police State as cruel & irrational is incisive. The cast of characters and their antics is fascinating: meet the dog who betrayed him, the beauty who didn’t talk, the police on the take, the bullies on every corner, the denizens of the jail/court ‘game’ & the ‘crew’ of shady friends. No doubt a sequel is in our future.

We meet online after the Sunday service on May 9, 2021. Go to ucv.im/coffee after the service ends and ask to join the Book Group breakout room. Get ready for a lively discussion with our Sunday group. Please join us; you will be a positive addition.

Our book for the June 12 meeting is The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared – a quirky, funny, rollicking tale. It was the best selling book in Sweden in 2010 and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. It is a fun book.
