All are welcome at this monthly book group meeting. We read and discuss a wide range of books, all chosen by book group members.
We will meet ONLINE after the service on January 10, 2021 to discuss the New York Times bestselling novel, My Name is Lucy Barton, the story of a writer reckoning with the legacy of a scarred family life and slowly coming to terms with the costs and the rewards of her art. A neighbour advises her to be ruthless if she wants to succeed as a writer. How she learns to become so is the subject of this quiet yet surprisingly fierce book. It is a story of a woman who suffers doubt but holds out hope for clarity, and who applies herself imperfectly but insistently to the task of living. It is also an affecting and wise exploration of the love between mother and daughter.
My Name Is Lucy Barton confirms Elizabeth Strout as a powerful storyteller immersed in the nuances of human relationships, weaving family tapestries with compassion, wisdom and insight.
We meet online after the Sunday service on January 10, 2021. Go to ucv.im/coffee after the service ends and ask to join the Book Group breakout room. Get ready for a lively discussion with our Sunday group. Please join us; you will be a positive addition.
We will discuss Braiding Sweetgrass in our book group meeting on February 14, 2021. Robin Wall Kimmerer shows us that science and spirituality are complementary and that we need to embrace both if we are to heal our planet…and ourselves. Take a walk with a true daughter of Mother Nature – then join us on February 14 for our always-interesting and sometimes wide-ranging discussion.
