Much has been written about the erosion of norms and the gradual undermining of democratic institutions in the USA and other Western countries. So is there is a danger of the same underlying factors eroding democracy in Canada? After a prolonged period of growth and prosperity, Canadians are now indicating a sense of declining economic well-being together with less trust in the legitimacy of “the system.” There is strong evidence that this is mutating into “higher levels of cultural insecurity which is linked to a disturbing rise in racism and nativism” (EKOS Politics).

Melody Mason, Social Justice Committee member, will give a presentation on the dangers to democracy in Canada. She would then like to lead a discussion on how to reinvigorate our democracy.

Sponsored by the Social Justice Committee.
