An LGBTQ Welcoming Congregation

2016-11-30_583f3e99ab3f3_welcomingcongregationlogoWe are proud that our congregation was certified as an officially Welcoming Congregation in 1995 – the second Unitarian congregation in Canada. All Canadian congregations have completed the Welcoming Congregation program. Many celebrate Pride with special services, events and participation in Pride parades.

We support all genders!

Our national association has a Gender and Sexual Diversity Monitoring Group which monitors news and issues for Unitarians to speak out on. To learn more about the work of CUC’s various social responsibility monitoring groups contact April Hope. In 2003, the CUC was very active in achieving the goal of equal marriage in Canada.

Unitarian organizations have repeatedly advocated for persons of all sexual orientations and gender identifications — supporting human rights for all. The Welcoming Congregation program helps congregations create a truly welcoming environment for all persons.

Specifically, as a Welcoming Congregation,

Vancouver Unitarians do the following:

  • We include and express the concerns of bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender persons at every level of congregational life
  • We celebrate the lives of all people and welcome same-sex couples, recognizing their committed relationships and equally affirming displays of caring and affection without regard to sexual orientation
  • We seek to nurture ongoing dialogue between bisexual, gay, heterosexual, lesbian and transgender persons, and create deeper trust and sharing
  • We advocate for bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender people, attending to legislative developments and working to promote justice, freedom and equality in the larger society
  • We speak out when the rights of bisexual, gay, lesbian and trangender people are at stake

Unitarianism, which has long had as its first guiding principle the commitment to “affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person,” has come further than any other North American faith tradition in welcoming and affirming bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender persons.
