In this brief presentation, Jan Walls will give an overview of how the verse form called “haiku” has evolved from a 17 syllable “one breath” expression of Zen Buddhist values, to include 17 syllable expressions of wit and humour (synryū), to haiku-like comments on social, economic and political issues. Typical examples of each style will be presented and discussed in English.
Jan Walls received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University in Chinese and Japanese Languages and Literatures. He is a Professor Emeritus in the Humanities Department at Simon Fraser University, where he was Founding Director of the David Lam Centre for International Communication and Founding Director of the Asia-Canada Program.
